What is the average specification for home alarm systems (monitored)?
A Standard Specification

Master Control Panel
The control console is the brain of the home security system, which regularly checks the alarm apparatus. When a detector is activated it operates the alert. It is usually hidden away below the stairs or in a cupboard.
Internal Siren
When the alarm is activated the loud sounder rings inside the property to confuse the intruder.
Control Keypad with Panic Buttons
This is where you set and unset the system. It is usually situated near the normal home entry doors, to allow you quick and easy access to use the system.
The home security alarm status is displayed on a simple screen, with colour-coded lights to confirm the alarm standing. It usually has an integrated personal attack control that can be used to summon help in an emergency.
A Close Reader used for turning off the alarm system via a programmed key fob.
1 x Door Contact These contacts detect when the door is opened. One part is fixed to the door and the other to the doorframe. When the door is opened the contact is broken and the alarm is triggered.
1 x Breaking Glass Detector
These are located in the proximity of the glass. When a window is broken, the sound of the breaking glass will trigger the alarm.Normally used in an area that is not protected by a PIR or for auxiliary detection.
4 x Passive Infrared Detectors (PIR’s)
PIRs detect motion by sensing the infrared energy released by body heat. If a burglar walks into a room protected with a PIR, the alarm is activated. The detectors are installed, usually in the corner of a room and throughout the house to offer best protection.
Pet Sensitive Motion Detectors
This type of detector senses heat, movement and bulk, recognizing dogs and cats up to a definite weight and height. Therefore, your pet can safely move around the house without constraint.
1 x Dummy External Bell Box
The external bell box is placed on the front of the house and acts as an excellent visual deterrent. In some home alarm systems, it sounds an external alarm bell when the alert is triggered.
1 Smoke Detector
Provides the essential extra protection of a monitored smoke detector. When molecules corresponding to a fire are detected in the air, the alarm is triggered.

How Does it Work?
If the alarm is triggered an alert is sent to the Alarm Receiving Station, via a telephone line and signalling system. They immediately telephone your home for password identification and to check if all is in order.
If the password ID is not given, or the telephone is not answered, the ARC operator contacts a keyholder, or in the event of a ‘Confirmed Incident’, the police.
